2017-2018 HAPA Big Island Chapter's Scholarship Recipients

The Big Island Chapter of the Hawaii Association of Public Accountants (HAPA) recently awarded five scholarships totaling $3,500 to five students pursuing accounting degrees.  Applicants are judged based on academic achievement, involvement in extracurricular activities, a personal letter of recommendation, and financial need.

The five awardees for the 2016-2017 academic year include:  Christopher Hu, a 2014 Waiakea High School graduate now attending Linfield College; Jubylen Teehee, a 2014 Hawaii Community College graduate now attending the University of Hawaii at Hilo; Sangkueon Kim who attends Hawaii Community College; Alanna Nicole Picana who attends Hawaii Community College; and Rebecca Tangpalan, a 2010 Hilo High School graduate now attending Hawaii Community College.

HAPA is a state-wide organization of accounting professionals that offers continuing professional education and fellowship among the business community.  The Big Island Chapter includes over 80 Certified Public Accountants, Public Accountants, and Associates.  HAPA scholarships are offered to encourage students to pursue careers in accounting and will again be offered for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Big Island Young Professionals "Paint and Sip" Event

As of May 2017, the Big Island Chapter has 21 Young Professional members. The group participated in a paint and sip activity hosted by Circle of Life Art Studio on May 10, 2017 at the Wainaku Executive Center. They painted “Starry Night Over Mauna Kea.” A total of 20 people (all under 35 years old) attended including 12 young professional members and 8 non-members. Raffle prizes included a gift cards to Yogurtland, Jamba Juice and Island Naturals Grocery Store.

Big Island Chapter General Membership Meeting

 

Our first general membership meeting of the year was held on September 19, 2016 at the Hilo Hawaiian.  Walter Haig owns a winery, and year years he brings some wine for us to sample as he gives us a lesson about wine.

The board also took the opportunity to introduce the new HAPA Big Island members.

So far the Big Island Chapter has a total of 17 new members!

The Big Island Chapter’s Outstanding Member this year is NECELYN CABALCE.  Necelyn has been on the Executive Board since joining HAPA and has been an active member by attending numerous events over the years.  She is a Senior Financial Services Specialist with the tax, accounting and business consulting firm of Taketa, Iwata, Hara & Associates, LLC and has been with the firm since June 2012.  Originally, from the Big Island, Necelyn graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.  Before joining Taketa, Iwata, Hara & Associates, she worked as a summer intern and later became a full-time employee at a medium-sized California regional firm for 4 years.  Necelyn is a Certified Public Accountant in both California and Hawaii.  This year, Necelyn will move from Treasurer to Vice-President for our chapter.
